From the Colossally Stupid Idea Department.

Comes the following story.

UNITED NATIONS/ BAGHDAD, SEPTEMBER 27: Secretary of State Colin Powell said the US would like Iraqi leaders to produce a constitution in six months, paving the way for polls perhaps six months later and a return to self-rule.

Well, after reading the whole story I can only make the following conclusion, Powell is throwing a bone to our "ally, France. He doesn't say the six-months is any kind of deadline nor does he say that it isn't subject to change, but still I am left to wonder a little.

If a senior cabinet level official (in this case Powell) is saying things like this, just what is going on behind the scenes in say, the White House? Do they honestly think that six months to a constitution and then to elections is an actual workable scenario? If they do, then they are deluded.

An objective look at our own history proves just how wrong that kind of thinking is. It took thirteen years for our current system of government to come into being, before that we had numerous stops and starts, the Articles of Confederation for example. And one could even argue that our government is still evolving and growing to this very day. In other words, even after 226 years our government still has some bugs to work out. To even give thought that six months is a workable scenario to a republican form of government in Iraq is misguided.

If there is a "rush to democratic self-rule" in Iraq then the process is doomed to failure, simple as that. That the process needs to take place goes without really saying, but let's take our time and get it right. We are the only country on earth with the right form of government for the Iraqi people. The only form of government that provides maximum freedom and liberty, if it is rushed then we would have failed and liberating Iraq would have been for nothing.
